Department 7 – Our Mission Statement
The employees of Department 7 - Municipalities, Elections and Rural Roads - stand for expertise, objectivity and innovation. We perform our duties with appreciation, a solution-oriented approach and a strong commitment to sustainability.
OUR AGENDA
- We advise and support the municipalities of Styria, as well as political decision-makers in the Province of Styria, in the implementation of municipal projects and on matters relating to municipal constitutional and administrative law, commercial and budgetary law, as well as taxation, elections, employment, remuneration and pension law.
- We provide services, advice and funding to municipalities for rural road construction and broadband development, respond swiftly to disasters and prepare the relevant expert assessments.
- We are responsible for conducting elections and for allocating municipalities their shares of tax revenues under the fiscal equalisation system.
- We exercise supervisory authority over municipalities and certain associations of municipalities and also conduct financial audits in this context. Certain legal transactions undertaken by municipalities require approval and are prepared by us for the Provincial Government to make a decision.
- Tax regulations as well as local police ordinances are reviewed for compliance with the law as part of our supervisory responsibilities.
THE OBJECTIVES SET OUT IN THE PROVINCIAL BUDGET GUIDE OUR WORK
- By supporting projects at municipal level, we contribute to maintaining and enhancing the quality of life of the people of Styria.
- The financial stability of municipal budgets in Styria is ensured.
- Pension entitlements and the reimbursement of severance payments for employees of municipalities and associations of municipalities, as well as the retirement benefits of mayors, are processed accurately and without deficiencies.
- Elections, as well as instruments of direct democracy, are conducted to a high standard, thereby safeguarding the democratic rights of citizens.
- The higher-level rural road network of greater traffic importance is maintained to its existing standard, while broadband infrastructure in the municipalities continues to be expanded.
- Safety at public railway level crossings on municipal roads is improved through appropriate structural modifications.
